Custom Overmolding Services

Rapid Tooling Production for custom overmolding services delivers high-quality prototypes and on-demand production parts in as little as two weeks, ensuring efficient turnaround times and exceptional results.

Custom Overmolding with Mucision

Seeking genuinely custom overmolded parts? Mucision specializes in high-quality, on-demand injection molding for prototypes and production parts. The overmolding process combines multiple materials into a single part, typically involving a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE/TPV) molded onto a rigid plastic substrate. This technique enhances both performance and appearance, as seen in toothbrushes with rigid and rubbery components. Explore our diverse thermoplastic elastomer and rigid plastic material options on our injection molding capabilities page.
At Mucision, we tailor our approach to all injection molding projects, regardless of your experience level. Our expertise lies in complex projects requiring side action or hand-loaded inserts. We aim to deliver long-term overmolding solutions beyond rapid prototyping, with dedicated project managers and engineering experts guiding you from design to production. Our services cater to various industries, including medical injection molding.

Design Tips for Overmolding

  • For optimal bonding, maintain wall thicknesses between 0.060″ to 0.120″ (1.5 mm-3 mm).
  • Ensure a minimum radius of 0.020″ or 0.5mm in corners to minimize stress concentration.
  • To prevent shrinkage issues, reduce part weight, and decrease cycle time, core out thick TPE sections.
  • Avoid incorporating deep, unventable blind pockets or ribs in your design.
  • Utilize gradual transitions between wall thicknesses to mitigate flow-related problems (backfills, gas traps, etc.).
  • Keep the TPE/TPV thickness less than the substrate to minimize warpage, particularly for flat or long parts.
  • Select overmold materials that promote mechanical or chemical bonding to the substrate for successful overmolding.

Custom Injection Molding Finishes

No secondary polishing or grinding. Part will show tooling marks.

We offer a variety of finishes from Grade 3 diamond / high polish to 320 stone low polish, including: SPI A-1, SPI A-2, SPI A-3, SPI B-1, SPI B-2, SPI B-3, SPI C-1, SPI C-2, SPI C-3, SPI D-1, SPI D-2, and SPI D-3.

Mucision can match other mold textures upon request.

Injection Molding Design Guidelines

Feature Tip

Undercuts

Reduce undercuts, which will increase the complexity and cost of the tool ejection mechanisms, by adding in pass-thru coring.

Wall Thickness

Prevent wall sink and voids by maintaining an even wall thickness. Thinner walls reduce cycle time and reduce costs.

Drafts

Ensure parts are designed with a minimum draft angle of 0.5°, or up to 5°, for faces with medium textures.

Ribs/Gussets

Ribs should be 40-60% the thickness of outer walls and should still maintain draft.

Bosses

Bosses should be designed at a depth of 30% the wall thickness and with a 30% edge groove. Attach them to side walls or ribs for structural integrity.
