The part surface is media blasted, typically using glass bead, to produce a smooth, matte appearance.

Type II creates a corrosion-resistant finish. Parts can be anodized in different colors—clear, black, red, and gold are most common—and is usually associated with aluminum. Type III is thicker and creates a wear-resistant layer in addition to the corrosion resistance seen with Type II.

This is a process where powdered paint is sprayed onto a part which is then baked in an oven. This creates a strong, wear- and corrosion-resistant layer that is more durable than standard painting methods. A wide variety of colors are available to create the desired aesthetic.

CNC General Tolerances

Description General Tolerance or Standard
Distance Dimensions For features of size (Length, width, height, diameter) and location (position, concentricity, symmetry) +/- 0.005”.
Orientation and Form Dimensions 0-12″ +/- 0.005″, Angularity 1/2 degree. For 24″ and beyond please consult Mucision’s Manufacturing Standards.
Edge Condition Sharp edges will be broken and deburred by default. Critical edges that must be left sharp should be noted and specified on a print.
Precision Tolerances We manufacture and inspect to tight tolerances, including sub +/- 0.001″ tolerances, per your drawing specifications and GD&T callouts.

For more details on tolerances for each process, please consult our customer service team. Unless otherwise specified in your Quote, we will strive to achieve and maintain the tolerances stated.

What is CNC Turning?

A CNC lathe machine, or live tooling lathe, is the preferred tool for crafting symmetrical cylindrical or spherical parts. Typically, a lathe rotates the workpiece on a vertical or horizontal axis, while a stationary shaping tool maneuvers along a linear path surrounding it. The process of cutting a workpiece using a CNC lathe is referred to as turning.

CNC lathes employ a subtractive technique to shape materials. Following G-code generation, a blank bar of stock material is secured in the chuck of the lathe’s spindle. The chuck holds the workpiece securely while the spindle rotates. Upon reaching the desired speed, a stationary cutting tool contacts the workpiece, removing material to attain the specified geometry.
Live tooling lathes can perform numerous operations, including facing, threading, knurling, drilling, boring, reaming, and taper turning. Each operation may require tool changes, potentially increasing cost and setup time.
Once all machining operations are finished, the part is separated from the stock for additional post-processing. The CNC lathe is then prepared to repeat the process with minimal setup time in between.
