Custom Selective laser sintering (SLS) at Mucision

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a potent 3D printing technology that produces highly precise and robust parts suitable for end-use, low-volume production, or rapid prototyping. As one of the most cost-effective industrial 3D printing solutions, SLS can fabricate parts in bulk without requiring support structures. SLS materials, primarily nylon-based, offer various infills that improve material properties, ranging from stiff carbon-filled to flame-retardant characteristics.

Utilizing additive manufacturing layer technology, SLS employs a high-power laser, such as a carbon dioxide laser, to fuse small plastic powder particles into a desired three-dimensional shape. The laser selectively melts the powdered material by scanning cross-sections generated from a 3D digital model (e.g., a CAD file) on the powder bed’s surface. After each cross-section scan, the powder bed is lowered, a new material layer is applied, and the SLS process is repeated until the part is completed.

What is SLS?

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a powder bed 3D printing technology that manufactures highly precise and robust parts suitable for end-use and low-volume production. Often considered a relative of the renowned metal 3D printing technology, Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), both processes employ a laser to accurately fuse powder layers, constructing parts from a 3D CAD file. SLS specializes in nylon or polyamide powder particles, whereas DMLS utilizes metal particles. This technology is increasingly popular for prototyping and low-volume production.

SLS Finishes Available at Mucision

SLS parts are de-powdered with a sandblasting process and manual powder removal. Internal holes may be drilled to size if accessible. The finish is white matte (fine sugar-cube).

With a variety of color options, including black, blue, green, red, and yellow, the dye penetrates approximately 0.010 inches deep. While batch-to-batch consistency may slightly differ, black offers the highest uniformity, ensuring reliable and aesthetically pleasing results for diverse applications.
AMT PostPro3D is an advanced automated post-processing technology that delivers a superior surface finish. Vapor smoothing transforms surfaces from matte to semi-gloss while sealing and enhancing mechanical properties, ensuring consistent and aesthetically pleasing results for production. Additionally, vapor-smoothed components can be dyed, further expanding their versatility and customization options.

The Standard finish undergoes abrasive media tumbling, reducing visible grow lines and softening sharp edges. This process results in an eggshell finish that provides a smoother and more refined appearance compared to untreated surfaces, improving overall aesthetics and tactile appeal.

Mucision provides additional SLS finishing and customization options upon request.

 Material Selection

Nylon PA12 (PA 2200) is a highly versatile polyamide material offering a uniform surface finish and exceptional resolution, perfect for intricate feature details. Ideal for functional prototyping and end-use applications requiring complex thin-walled parts, chemical resistance, snap fits, and low vibration resistance, PA 2200 demonstrates impressive performance. Additionally, PA 2200 complies with biocompatibility standards EN ISO 10993-1 and USP/Level VI/121 °C, ensuring safe use in various industries.

Black PA12 is a high-performance polyamide material infused with black dye, delivering a consistent matte black surface finish and exceptional resolution for intricate feature details. Perfect for functional prototyping and end-use applications that require complex thin-walled parts, chemical resistance, snap fits, and low vibration resistance with a sleek black finish, Black Nylon PA 12 offers unparalleled performance and aesthetics.

Nylon ESD is a high-performance Nylon12 polyamide infused with a permanent electrostatic dissipative coating, effectively minimizing electrostatic charge risks. Coated with 844AR Aerosol by MG chemicals, the material cures at room temperature without cracking, peeling, or chipping during regular usage, ensuring reliable performance and safety.

Nylon Glass Filled (GF) is a glass filled polyamide material ideal for creating exceptionally stiff & hard parts for both prototyping and functional end-use applications. This type of Nylon is best for applications that require high heat resistance and dimensional stability. The unique glass filled infill helps prevent warping and breaking making it a great material for creating large functional parts.

TPU 88A is a robust, flexible, and resilient material that offers exceptional surface quality and intricate detail, making it ideal for a wide range of applications. With a consistent white color that simplifies finishing processes, TPU 88A is a versatile choice for various industries. The provided table outlines the standard tolerances for selective laser sintering. However, various factors such as build stresses and geometric complexities may lead to deviations in tolerances and flatness. Designs featuring thicker geometries, flat or broad parts, and uneven wall thicknesses may experience significant deviations or warping. Enhanced tolerances can potentially be achieved through manual quote review and successful prototyping, subject to case-by-case approval. General tolerances are applicable prior to secondary finishing or post-processing unless otherwise stated.
